TALENT SEARCH 2009 FAMILY DAY

Talent Search 2009 Family Day was held on 11 September 2009 at Pocket D4. The aims of this family day are to strengthen the bond between all committee members and to ensure that every committee members know each other well before our event. This is essential for them whom will be working together as a team for upcoming Talent Search 2009.

#1 Family Day!!! =D

The flow of event for Family Day was prepared by Adjudication Department leaded by Loo Hui Shiong. This event begins at 9.30pm and our emcees are Tay Chuang Hwee and See Yun Chuan. This event begins with Montage on previous Talent Search, followed by introduction of all committee members in every department.

There are eight departments in Talent Search 2009 which are Ceremony and Protocol Department, Promotion and Publication Department, Adjudication Department, Registration and Ticketing Department, Logistic Department, Welfare Department, Public Relation and Sponsorship Department and last but not least, Digital Media and Technical Department. All departments are required to prepare their wn slides using their own creativity with their pictures and contact number, email address as well as their job scope in Talent Search 2009.

#3 Everyone is anticipating the games. Hehe

Then, we have some fun, playing a game prepared by Public Relation and Sponsorship Department leaded by Irene Lock Sow Mei. The games named “Ohana”. We are asked to choose three different island and sit freely, preferably with someone that we do not know before. Each island named as “O-multiplication of three”, “Ha – multiplication of seven” and “Na- multiplication of thirteen” respectively. Irene and Chua will shout a number and all islands are given five seconds to think whether that number is multiplication of their respective number or not. If so, they have to shout their island name loudly. The island that loses will have to sing a song in front of all members.

This event ends with speech by Johnny Tiong Hok Hui, Project Director of Talent Search 2009. He hopes that everyone will work together for upcoming Talent Search 2009. We only have one month for preparation before the Finale on 23rd October 2009. He hopes that Talent Search 2009 wills successfully happen as scheduled. With hard work of all committee members, he believed that we can have different concept of Talent Search this year whereby, we will be having two categories which are Singing Category and Open Talent Category.

31st August 2009 is the 52th Independence Day in Malaysia. It marks that this land is free from British colonization for 52 years already. Wow, so long already. =D

Featuring in this picture is Malaysia National flag, or more commonly known as Jalur Gemilang by us. In english, it means stripes of glory, a pretty nice name isn't it?

This flag was called as Malaysia flag until our 4th Prime Minister Tun Mahathir renamed it as Jalur Gemilang during the celebration of the country’s 44^th year of independence. Apart from denoting the number of members states, the straight stripes (Jalur) of the flag suggest the upright path being pursued by all Malaysians towards a common goal of attaining excellence for race and nation. Gemilang (glory) means light and brilliance.

Therefore, Jalur Gemilang is an emblem of the excellence of the country and tenacity of the rakyat to rise above the trials of life, and to heighten the image of the nation.

The Flag of Malaysia is a combination of traditional Islamic symbols and the representation of all the States under the Federation. The 14 stripes and 14 points of the star represent the equal status of the 14 member States - Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Pulau Pinang, Perak, Perlis, Sabah, Sarawak, Selangor and Terengganu in the Federal government.

The vertical Jalur Gemilang

The colour red signifies strenght, bravery and courage in facing challenges. The colour white symbolises honesty and integrity. The dark blue canton represents the unity and harmony of the peoples of Malayis. The crescent represents Islam as the dominant religion.

The 14-pointed star symbolises the unity of the 13 states with the Federal Government. The yellow colour of the crescent and star is the royal colour of the Rulers.

There is a song dedicated for this Fantastic creation, Jalur Gemilang. Most of us heard of it but are unaware of their lyrics. So, we, UTP Talent Search 2009, will be sharing out the lyrics here. Hope you all enjoy. ^^

4. To create well-rounded students, that not only excels in the field of engineering and technology, but also in generic skills.

5. To display the diversities of talents (singing, dancing, performing magic, miming, sports and other talents) of UTP students.

The National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) was founded in 1966 and is financed entirely by voluntary contributions from the public and receives no government funding. This allows the society to pursue new and innovative services for patients with cancer.

NCSM is dedicated to preventing cancer, saving lives from cancer and improving the quality of life of those living with cancer through patient care and education. Rules and Regulations

General Rules and Regulations for Talent Search 2009

1. This competition is open to all UTP students ONLY.
2. Registration for each participant is RM10.
3. There are two categories: Singing Category and Open Talent Category.
4. Ground Rules are subjected to the code of conduct of UTP.
5. Each participant can take part in both the categories. If the participant is selected for the finals of both categories, he will have to choose either one.
6. All the participants are COMPULSORY to attend a briefing session that is decided by organizing committees.
7. We ARE NOT liable for any loss or damage of personal belongings (CD) before, during or after the event.
8. The contents of the performance MUST NOT contain any expletives or elements regarding politics, religion, sex, drugs and/or sensitive issues.
9. All the participants, friends and supporters must display good sportsmanship and good manners during the event. Judges, committees and audience must be treated with respect at all times.
10. The organizing committees have the right to reject or disqualify the entry of the participants if the participants violate any Rules and Regulations.
11. The organizing committees reserve the right to impose a penalty for any infringement of the “Rules and Regulations”.
12. The organizing committees reserve the right to make necessary amendments to the “Rules and Regulations” without prior notice.
13. Each participant will be allowed NOT MORE THAN 5 minutes for performance unless being requested by judges. Ten percent of the participants’ points will be deducted for each minute.
14. All the registration forms MUST be submitted before 8th October 2009 (Thursday) by 11.00 pm.
15. With respect to the professional team of judges, all judge’s decision will be FINAL and no further correspondence will be entertained.

Format for Singing Category
1. Participants will go through one day of audition on 10th October 2009 to qualify for the FINAL on 23rd October 2009.
2. 5 finalists will be chosen to compete in the finals.
3. This is a solo singing category. No group participation is allowed for this category. No personal band is allowed.
4. Participants are required to perform one song in the audition and 2 songs in the finals.
5. For the final, participants need to perform in:
a. First round : 1 song per finalist
b. Second round : Group singing where 5 finalists will sing together
6. For the first round of finals, participants can only choose one song from the list of selected songs.
7. As for the second round of the finals, the title of the song will be decided by the organizing committees.
8. Finalists will have a live band playing the background music of their selected songs.
9. Each song performed during the audition and finals is limited to 5 minutes only except for second round of the finals.
10. For the audition, all participants will be totally judged by our selected professional judges. No voting system will be conducted during audition.
11. For the finals, marks from judges contribute 60 % to the total marks while the audiences’ voting contributes to 40 % to the total marks.

Judging criteria:
1. For audition, the judging criteria are as follow:
a. Showmanship (Stage personality and flairs) 20 %
b. Vocals (60%)
i. Voice control 20 %
ii. Pitches 20 %
iii. Voice range 20 %
c. Appearance 10 %
d. Diction / Pronunciation 5 %
e. Interaction with Audience 5%

2. For the finals, marks from judges contribute 60 % to the total marks while the audiences’ voting contributes to 40 % to the total marks.

Rules and Regulation for Audition and Finals of Singing Category
1. Participants are allowed to sing only one song of their own choice during the audition. The songs may be either Malay or English songs.
2. The performance is limited to 5 minutes ONLY.
3. The song chosen MUST NOT imply or contain any expletives.
4. The content of the lyrics MUST NOT contain elements regarding politics, religions, sex, drugs or sensitive issues.
5. Dress appropriately for the audition and finals.
6. Participants are required to submit their lyrics together with their registration form.
7. Participants will be PENALIZED if the song selected and lyrics differ from the song selected and lyrics submitted.
8. Participants MUST bring along the softcopy of the minus-one-version of chosen song during the briefing session which will be held on 9th October 2009, 10.30 pm at LH2.
9. All participants are COMPULSORY to attend the briefing session.
10. At the briefing session, participants will draw lots to determine their sequences for the audition.
11. Each finalist will draw lots after notification of the place in the finals to determine the sequences.
12. Participants are advised to be on the spot 30 minutes before their performances. Late comers will be penalized.
13. Each practice session is 1 hour per finalist.
14. Rules and regulations are subjected to change by organizing committees without prior notice.

Format for Open Category

1. Participants will go through one day of audition on the 11st October 2009 before making it to the FINAL on 23rd October 2009.
2. 5 finalists will be chosen to compete in the finals.
3. Maximum number of participants per group is 6 people.
4. Participants are required to perform the same act in the finals as was performed in the audition. (For e.g., dancing still remains as dancing, magic still remains as magic)
5. For the finals, the finalists will perform 1 round only.
6. Each performance performed during the audition and finals MUST NOT exceed 5 minutes in length.
7. Musical instruments ARE NOT provided.
8. For the audition, all participants will be totally judged by our selected professional judges. No voting system will be conducted during audition.
9. For the finals, marks from judges contribute 60 % to the total marks while the audiences’ voting contributes to 40 % to the total marks.

Judging Criteria for Open Category

1. For audition, the judging criteria are as follow:
a) Ability to sustain audiences’ attention 20%
- Audience response
b) Creativity and choreography 20%
- Flexibility to adopt to situation
- Props and materials
c) Skills in performing talents 20%
- Confidence
- Covers mistake well
d) Stage etiquette 20%
- Image and attire
- Facial expression
- Behaviour on stage
e) Overall performance and impression 20%

2. For the finals, marks from judges contribute 60 % to the total marks while the audiences’ voting contributes to 40 % to the total marks.

Rules and Regulations for Auditions and Finals of Open Category

1. Participants are allowed to perform their talents. But only certain talents are allowed (For e.g., telling jokes, dancing, performing magic, miming, sports, playing instrumental music and others). Talents such as euphonious band- like performances, performing dangerous stunts which involve fire, sharp objects, drugs or animals are NOT allowed.
2. The organizing committees reserve the right to amend participant’s performance if it is found not suitable for the general public.
3. The participants will be given a second chance if their first performances are not approved.
4. Each performance must not be more than 5 minutes.
5. The performance MUST NOT imply or contain any expletives.
6. The content of the performance MUST NOT contain elements regarding politics, religions, sex, drugs or sensitive issues.
7. Dress appropriately for the auditions and finals.
8. Participants are required to submit the details of their performances (background music, script etc). A short description of the performance is to be handed in to the organizing committees for censorship together with the registration form.
9. Participants will be PENALIZED if their performances during the audition or finals differ from the description submitted.
10. Participants MUST bring along relevant materials (songs for dancing, musical instruments for instrumental music performing, etc) during the briefing session which will be held on 9th October 2009, 10.30pm in LH3.
11. All participants are COMPULSORY to attend the briefing session.
12. At the briefing session, participants will draw lots to determine their sequences for the audition.
13. Each finalist will draw lots after notification of their places in the finals to determine their sequences.
14. Participants are advised to be on the spot 30 minutes before their performances. Late comers will be penalized.
15. Each practice session is 1 hour for each finalist.
